This seriously pisses me off

I see little girls all the time with their ears pierced and while I don’t like it, I keep my mouth shut. Why? Because it’s none of my business, that’s why.

But when I actually SEE someone FORCING their child to get their ears pierced, it royally pisses me off.

There ARE little girls that don’t shed that first tear…they don’t even whimper. That’s great. Everyone (even kids) have their own pain tolerance and some can (and do) handle ear piercing.

But what I saw today made my blood boil.

I’m walking through Wal-Mart and as I go past the jewelry section, I look over at this woman struggling with her daughter. The child looked to be about 3 years old. And really, struggling isn’t really what she was doing…she was WRESTLING with her to hold her head to the side so the lady working there could pierce that ear. Then you hear this head splitting scream come from this child.

My daughters were with me and both of them were .

The oldest asked me if she could get her ears pierced at the age of 11 (last year) and I said ok. I explained that I had mine done when I was 11 and it DID hurt *me*. I didn’t know if it would her or not. I wasn’t about to lie to her.

My youngest is 7 and she asks me to let her get hers pierced every time we go to town. I say sure and when we are at Wal-Mart, she changes her mind. This is no skin off my back. I told her having her ears pierced is NOT a necessity in life. She does NOT have to get it done. After seeing and hearing that little girl today, I don’t think she’ll ever get them done and that’s ok with me!

But to FORCE it on a child just because YOU (general you) think it’s cute and want it done??? That is beyond wrong, IMO.

And seeing that woman hold that child against her will and MAKING her go through that….I snapped and announced pretty loudly that she should be horse whipped. Wonder how she’d like that?

That sucks. Big time. It’s not right to force your kids to do anything like that just because you want them to (little kids in beauty contests, that stupid “I know my kids a star” show come to mind).

Although I kind of have mixed feelings on it because I had my ears done when I was three months old, and so has my niece and a friend’s baby. They have numbing cream for it, and according to everyone none of us cried. If I have a daughter I’ll probably get hers done too.

Although I admit when I got my other holes (I have nine in my ears), some of them hurt like hell.

Some parents should need licenses before they have kids.

And that was a long winded random comment!

    Cindy,

I had to BEG to get my ears pierced at age 13. I was so happy when I finally was able to. But to FORCE a 3-year-old???? I don’t get the mentality. I also don’t agree with having a baby’s ears pierced. If I ever have a daughter, having her ears pierced will be HER choice when she’s old enough to ask.

And I agree that some parents need licenses before having children.

I used to work in the jewelry department at Wal-Mart and there was nothing worse than having to pierce a child’s ears that did not want to have it done. I finally got to the point where I would just say no and risk getting myself into trouble. It made me extremely uncomfortable especially when the child clearly did not want to have it done. I do not know why parents force this on their children. My youngest daughter got her ears pierced at ten but she was much like your daughter and asked me everytime we went to Wal-Mart. So my oldest daughter took her to get them pierced for tenth birthday.

I just really don’t get it.

Should not force kids to do anything. I got mine done when I was like 11 or 12, can’t remember. Did my 2nd holes myself.
