Shiloh Walker Interview

First, I’d like to congratulate you on your new release, Through the Veil. Can you tell us a little about this book?

Through the Veil isn’t exactly easy to classify. It’s part urban fantasy, part paranormal. It’s romance, but the romance isn’t the only part of the story. It’s about a world on the brink of destruction, but that doesn’t dictate the story.

Actually, a review described it better than I could…over at Errant Dreams:

Shiloh Walker’s Through the Veil spans so many genres: romance, erotica, fantasy, science fiction, horror, paranormal. What makes it so good is the fact that it’s a story first and any genre considerations are simply a part of making that story what it needs to be.

It’s a romance…but genre considerations are almost incidental, because I was just trying to tell the story.

How long have you been writing and what was your first published book?

I’ve been writing since I was kid, published since 2003…I think.

Do you plot out your stories first or do you let the characters lead you?

The characters usually, but I try to plot things out some, too. Makes it easier in the long run.

What are you currently working on?

CHAINS-it’s a single author anthology with conencted stories for Berkley.

Of all your characters, do you have a heroine that you identify with the most? If so, which one and how do you identify with her?

Oh, man, I don’t know. I tend to see echoes of my smart-ass mouth in most of them. But I don’t know if that means I relate to them.

I really can’t say. (Cindy here: You have a smart-ass mouth??? I never would have thought that. *cough* LOL )

Is there a genre that you haven’t written, but would like to try one day?

More straight fantasy or science fiction at some point. Just don’t know when I’ll have time.

What is the best thing about your job as an author? What is the hardest thing?

Best-being able to silence the voices in my head. Worst…silencing them opens my head up to new voices.

Just kidding… mostly.

Have you ever had any embarrassing moments at a book-signing that you can share with us?

Nah. Worst thing was this time somebody kept trying to get me to answer whether or not I’d ever done all the things I’ve written about. She wouldn’t take the “it’s make believe” answer until I told her I’d written about serial killers, psycho rapists and kidnappers but I hadn’t raped, killed or kidnapped anybody.

After that…she stopped asking.

Describe a day in the life of Shiloh Walker.

Starting… when the sun comes up or when the baby rises?

I usually can’t sleep past 7. If the kids let me, my body doesn’t. So then I’m up, check email, do my blog hop while they eat breakfast.>/p>

Then it’s off to the Y a few days a week-I’ve done the ‘changing my lifestyle’ bit and I’m down 30 lbs. In another 30, I may stop hitting the Y so much.

Then the kids go to school/sitters and I go home to work. I can’t write too much before noon, so I do updates, email, edits, whatever until noon and then from noon to five, I try to write.

Then I pick up the kids. We might have taekwondo, might go home. Dinner. Homework if it’s during school, but I let them play video games a little in the summer. Or outside.

Bathtime, bedtime.

Work until I crash.

Speaking of which…I need a nap.

Favorites…

Favorite Season?

Fall.

Morning person or night owl?

Natural inclination is a night owl. Children require me to be a morning person. Man, the sacrifices a parent makes….

Favorite movie?

Hmmm…. Return of the King

Favorite song?

Depends on my mood.

Favorite color?

Blue. Sometimes purple. Sometimes black. Usually blue. But I like red.

Fun Questions…

If you had a shrinking device, what’s the one thing in your house you’d miniaturize first?

My thighs.

If a movie was made about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role as you?

No comment. Nobody. No movie… *G*

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Bratticisms.

Instead of leaves or money, what do you wish would grow on trees?

Time.

If you had to smell like one thing for the rest of your life, what scent would you pick?

Hmmmm….honeysuckle.

Shi, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule and doing this interview with me!

Worst thing was this time somebody kept trying to get me to answer whether or not I’d ever done all the things I’ve written about.

People who don’t quite get the dividing line between reality and fiction make me nervous!

Actually, a review described it better than I could…

I think it’s one of the coolest moments ever as a reviewer to have an author say you described their book better than they could.

Through the Veil is a dead-awesome book that absolutely deserves a read if you enjoy almost any kind of genre fiction at all. It made me an instant Shiloh Walker fan. I’ve had the chance to read some great stuff this year, but that still sticks out as one of the top five or so books I’ve read this year (since I usually review 3-6 a week, that means a lot).

I want time to grow on trees too! But then imagine how much more crap we would pack into our days! LOL!

    Great questions and great answers

LOL… Heather, I’ve had trouble describing this book almost from day one. It’s not quite any one thing, a little bit of a lot of things… you nailed it.

Aly, I think time is a great thing to grow on trees.
