And things were going so well…

…until today.
Now, other than the lunch/snack issue, I was beginning to think that this would be a good year. I like both teachers that my kids got and even said “sure!” when one of them called and asked me to help with a thing she was doing with the class last week. DH went with me to talk to them about cotton and what all is made with it and he took a cotton stalk with him to show them what it looked like. We both had fun.
While driving my kids to school this morning, my daughter informs me that her teacher wouldn’t be there. I thought she might be sick, so I asked DD what was wrong with her. She said
“Nothing, she going with **another teacher** to take a few of the kids out of our class to sell ads.”
Me: *scratching head* Sell ads for what?
DD: For the annual (year book)
Me: Ummm…who all is going?
DD: They announced who was picked to go last week. (then she proceeded to name off some of them)
Me: Hmmmm…how do they pick who goes?
DD: I don’t know
By now we are at the school and she doesn’t seem real concerned about it, so I dropped it. Nothing major since it didn’t bother her…I was cool.
I had forgot about it…until school let out and DD gets in the truck.
DD: Mama? That just wasn’t fair.
Me: *scratching head again* Uh..what wasn’t fair?
DD: Half of the class went (half girls, half boys) and was gone all day while we worked and THEN when they came back, they had a slush from the Sonic and ***child’s name*** had an oreo blast!
I saw red. And then I called the principal, ’cause I’m still not sure (even as I type this) HOW they pick which kids get to go. It can’t be grades or mine would’ve been asked (YES, I’m bragging about my silver club child…sue me). Anyway, here’s that conversation…
Me: ***principal***? This is Cindy. I need to ask about the trip taken today. The kids that got to go…how were they chosen?
P: Ummm…I’m not sure. I have nothing to do with that and ***teacher*** is over the yearbook thing. I know that it used to be that the kids with a discipline problem didn’t get to go, but that wouldn’t have anything to do with ***DD***, so I’m not sure how they picked this year.
Me: Well, I have talked to a few parents and we’ve all got some pretty upset kids on our hands. I mean really….there was no fairness in that at all. Not only did they not get to go and have to do school work all day when the others didn’t, but then to add insult to injury, the others brought in their slushes and blasts with them. That is so not fair on soooo many levels. Not to mention the fact that with ANYTHING that is done, it is guaranteed that the teacher’s kids get to do it.
P: Actually, that IS fair. They are always having to stay after school because their parent has to stay at times and work, so they have to stay with them. Therefore, they get to do these things when we have them.
Me: That’s not mine or any of the other kid’s problem. And NO, it’s NOT right.
P: Well, I promise you I don’t know how they were picked, but I can check on it for you.
Me: I’d appreciate it.
So I’m waiting on that.
Now…I’m tired, have the headache from hell (it’s a clinching day…wonder why?).
I just can’t for the life of me figure out how they thought any of that was right? I mean, it’s bad enough that only half the class could go…btw…Did I mention that there’s only ONE 5th grade class in that place?!?!!? And only half could go.
Then they don’t make them throw out their slush and/or ice cream before they go back in (I won’t even go into how wrong it is that they got it to begin with and the others didn’t). Rude ass people I tell ya.

Coming at this from the other angle…
Life isn’t fair. And really sometimes we just need to learn to deal. We learn to deal by growing up and as a person who’s mom stepped in whenever and ‘fixed’ things for me I have to wonder if that is the right thing to do.
Yes there are time you need to and times many (MANY) parents don’t when they should… but it sounds like you are talking about an selling ads and slushies.
I would have been annoyed they were made to go sell something *g*. And I can see being pissy if the same kids were picked over and over and over.
But I can’t see that anything bad was done. All of the kids will not be able to do everything all the time.
LOL but I don’t know the whole story and I could be wrong
