Farming and Insane Drivers

As most know, I’m the wife of a farmer.

Being the wife of a farmer, and a worrier on top of that, my stomach usually stays knotted up all Spring, Summer and Fall.

Why?

Because some people obviously don’t seem to realize that farmer’s have to be on the road too.

I get a call from my DH the other night. He wants me to help him move the equipment back to the house from the field he had just finished. The field is about 25 minutes from our house.

So he moves the 2 semi’s back to the house and I take him back to the field to get the tractor and grain cart. We have to take the backroads with the tractor (and it has the grain cart attached to it). The roads are big enough for one vehicle basically and you have to “scoot over” if you meet anyone. Now, I’m behind DH with my flashers on so everyone that comes up behind me will know I’m with him. I call him and tell him anytime a car gets behind me so he can pull over and let them by.

This one…person…gets flies up behind me and tries to PASS ME. Um…there’s a huge ass tractor in front of me…where were they going?

I really want to scream at people sometimes…ok, all the time. *bg* Yes, it is irritating to meet a farmer on the road, but they have just as much of a right to be there as anyone. Are they supposed to sprout wings and fly to the fields?

I honestly don’t think people realize how dangerous this situation is/could be.

A couple of years ago, my DH was on his way to a field. He was slowing down, had his blinker on and as he was INTO the turn he was making…BAM…wreck. Someone wasn’t paying attention apparently and tried to pass him. They had 6 kids in the car with them. Everyone was ok…Thank God. So, not only did they get a ticket for trying to pass him (he was able to prove he had the blinker on), but they also got a ticket for having too many people in the vehicle (not enough seat belts for all).

Anyway…this is just something that always irritates the hell outta me.
